If you've read this site before, perhaps you remember back a few months ago when we suggested you sacrifice at least one White Castle run so you can buy ABO's 2nd album Derdang Derdang. It's still one of my favoritest albums from this year.
Read MoreSpank Rock is puerile nerdy hip-hop, not unlike the Beastie Boys, though think less screeching granny and more whining Urkel. The group’s name is apropos, and like all the young dudes, these guys are just as apt to spank it as they are to rock.
They whip it out to measure it in each track, rhyming about that narrow gap between getting pussy and getting Rick Rubin to produce your album. (You were possibly wondering when someone would be brave enough for such a task?) You’ll hear plenty of robotic beeps and vocoder squawks, as you might so far expect, but the beats will make you shake it, the rhythms will make you groove, and the samples will make you smile. YoYoYoYoYo is a fun album; also one of the few albums I own that my wife also enjoys, maybe even more than I do.

Last Friday I headed over to the Southgate House to welcome Cincinnati native and former Afghan Whigs frontman, Greg Dulli, back to town with the Twilight Singers. This was a show that I had been looking forward to, my wife had been marking off calendar days for, and a good portion of the metro area had been salivating over for weeks.

Portland trio, Stars of Track and Field opened with a rousing set that sold quite a few records for them at the merch table and had the crowd rocking, waiting for the Twilight Singers to take the stage. After the requisite changing out of equipment, the lights dimmed and then… we waited. Read More

Since being saved in the 11th hour by Bill Nguyen of lala.com, woxy.com has turned it up to, well, 11.
This past week’s Lounge Acts featured an almost hour long acoustic set/interview with Pixies frontman/teenager of the year, Frank Black, and program director, Matt Shiv, is kicking it up in lala with a rather nice exploration into lala’s library with a radio station of his own (thanks to reader, Alice M). Add that to the fact that you can download three different woxy podcasts (Lounge Acts, Unsigned Artists, and the Modern Rock Minute) and you’re pretty much golden.
Frank Black, of course, played Halloween night at the Southgate House, so we would be remiss if we didn’t at least feature some of his music.
