Things have gone a bit differently for Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar since Uncle Tupelo…
Mouserocket*
One of my favorite albums from last year was the self-titled debut from Mouserocket. The album actually came out in 2004, but it didn’t appear on my radar until last year when I followed a link to a track on the SceneStars blog.
Much of the music is simple-chord rock, which some have categorized as punk, with some excellent swerve-driving in Satan’s car. I guess I can concede the punk label. It’s high-energy with some screaming vocals that would be perfect for skating, but the album also includes a slight metal edge that could cause you to bang your head a trifle, some psychedelic singing, some classic rock compositions, a bunch of garage rock, and a ton of unnatural chords familiar to the indie rock scene. Really the term “indie rock” covers the masala of rock genres, so that’s the camp I prefer for these guys.
I’m hard-pressed to pick a favorite track off this album – so many of them are great – but the track that first helped me realize that I would love this album “way down to the rind” is the second song My Boyfriend’s a Killer. Sure, it sounds an awful lot like the Batman theme, but the Batman theme is cool, so get over it.**

*I realized that too many S’s would have completely changed the meaning. And it was getting annoying. Sorry about that.
**I kid you only because I love you.
