Who’s got the junk? Rattle off a list of cities with the best music scenes for me. Whaddya got? Austin? Seattle? Chicago? Athens, Georgia maybe? What about Philadelphia? I ask only because I care. And because the city of brotherly love would be near the top of mine.

Over the past five or six years bands like Mazarin, Shellito, Need New Body, Dr. Dog, Espers, and even the Spinto Band have worked their way into my rotation and never really left. And now Blood Feathers have joined the party.

Slow Moon Rising

Coincidentally perpetuating the current male/female duo theme, I have been currently listening to a good-sized dosage of Brightblack Morning Light. Brightblack consists of Nathan Shineywater and Rachel Hughes, childhood best friends who grew up in Alabama, and drummer Noah Wilson, whom they met upon moving to Humboldt. I am a late comer of sorts to their music considering their first full length, Ala.Cali.Tucky, was initially released two years ago next month.

If You Sing It, They Will Win

1982 Cardinals

So I just returned from a 24-hour road trip to Saint Louis so I could attend the Cardinals’ Opening Day and enjoy the festivities surrounding the opening of Busch Stadium III – Revenge of the Swill*.

In keeping with their out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new theme, the first pitch ceremony featured last year’s Cy Young and MVP, Chris Carpenter and Albert Pujols, simultaneously throwing out first pitches to past Cy Young and MVP, Bob Gibson and Willie McGee. It was like a big juicy baseball sandwich – a wonderful, spring afternoon filled with drinking overpriced beer out of wax cups in standing room only smushed in between two 5+ hour slices of tooling down Interstate 70.

Seeing Willie McGee out there got me to reminiscing during my drive home. During Willie’s first year in the majors, he hit two home runs in the third game of the World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers and made a several outstanding plays in the field. That was 1982, the last time the Cardinals won the Series, but it was also one of the last times they would have a theme song.

Mates of State & Bagheera

Because yesterday I posted some tracks from Work Clothes, it got me thinking about some of the other husband and wife teams that I’ve been listening to lately: Mates of State, since their new album just came out a couple of weeks ago, and Bagheera, who are working on their 2nd LP.
