Things have gone a bit differently for Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar since Uncle Tupelo…
A Timely Reminder Of All That Runs True
So as my father-in-law would say, I have three days and a wake-up before I fly to Scandinavia.
Starting off in Helsinki and then taking a boat across the Baltic to Stockholm, I don’t suspect the weather will be any warmer in that part of the world.
In fact, in looking back at the crummy weather we’ve had in southern Ohio over the past several weeks, it was probably just to prepare me for what’s to come.
Head bowed, scarf wrapped tightly, walking so fast that I’m largely ignoring those around me.
But wait! What’s that light peaking through the cloudcover? Could it be the Aurora Borealis?
No, no. It’s Wan Light.
Wan light surrounds my heart
Its chimes make light of this dismal plight
The name evokes the moon’s pale reflections off the snow, but is actually taken from an Orange Juice song by the same name.
K. Svensson and M. Karnock. Two guys from Stockholm. Who apparently have a love for Scottish pop.
Yet, their music is more along the lines of Mercury Rev. Which to me means that it’s fucking great.
Check out Wan Light’s blog and then check out their music. If these two songs aren’t enough to get you to buy Carmaline, then you must ask yourself, “Is this what life is all about?”
- Wan Light – Two Words Away
- Wan Light – In the Heart of Sarah Freeman
Buy Carmaline.

They remind me of Australian/New Zealand pop, like The Go-Betweens or Splint Enz, especially in “two words aWAY”. But yes there is a real thick slice of Mercury Rev in the middle of their songs. I likey. Their website is pretty, too. Real icey.
[…] Now we’ve talked about The Knife before, specifically their excellent 2004 album Deep Cuts and Heartbeats which Jose Gonzalez covered wonderfully on his equally great, but for an entirely different reason, Veneer (You download both versions here and here). But when I stopped in at Pet Sounds in Södermalm on my recent visit to Stockholm, the kids in the store were rocking out to The Knife’s newest, Silent Shout, which had just been released. As I thumbed through the Pelle Carlberg and Wan Light, I remembered that scene in High Fidelity except I moved it to Scandinavia in and put myself in the store… using only the power of my mind! ROB I will now sell 4 copies of Silent Shout by The Knife. […]
